Hundreds of us protested outside the the UK Government’s Energy Conference to which Trump flew US officials to fight for fossil fuel profits and sabotage renewables, alongside oil CEOs.
The UK could be on the brink of doing something huge: stopping new oil and gas drilling for good. ‘Drill baby drill’ Trump and his fossil-fuel allies know it — and they’ll do what they can to derail our progress. We can’t let them.
Almost 1 million of you have already told the UK government that you want an end to drilling, a fast and fair transition for industry workers, a “safe” climate and affordable energy. We stood outside of the summit, in our masses, drowning out any influence that Trump and oil CEOs have in that room.
The “Summit on the Future of Energy Security,” co-hosted by the UK Government and the International Energy Agency brought together Energy Ministers from countries across the world, and bosses from the likes of Equinor, Shell and Eni.
Oil-frenzied Trump and his team have already been attacking the UK’s transition away from fossil fuels towards renewables. Now he wants to pressure the UK into abandoning climate leadership and doubling down on fossil fuels. And he’s not alone. The industry and some UK politicians are already trying to ram through disastrous new oil and gas projects like Rosebank.
As world leaders and energy CEOs gather to discuss our future, we made it impossible to ignore that people want climate action, a fair transition and affordable energy now. The first step we need is to stop new drilling and speed up the energy transition.
People want change – not the same rip-off energy system where oil giants walk off with massive profits while we’re left with higher bills, declining jobs and a worsening climate crisis. It’s time for a rapid and just transition to homegrown clean affordable energy that prioritises community, workers and justice. Together we can build that fossil-free future in a cleaner, fairer world.
