We have some incredible news to share. We’ve won our court case against the approval of the massive Rosebank oil field, the biggest undeveloped oil field in the UK!
The court has ruled the Rosebank oil field unlawful and its approval has been overturned. The ruling states that “The public interest in authorities acting lawfully and the private interest of members of the public in climate change outweigh the private interest of the developers”.
This is a monumental victory in the fight for a liveable future for all. Thank you to all who have supported us, especially to the 100,000 people who supported the court case.
The government now has the chance to remake the decision after their oil & gas consultation concludes in the Spring. In the meantime, no oil or gas can be extracted from the field.
Experts are clear: we can and must stop new oil and gas developments now to stay within “safe” climate limits. But this musn't come at the expense of workers and communities that have relied on these industries for generations. New fields like Rosebank won’t solve the decline of jobs in the North Sea. Over the past decade, the number of jobs supported by the oil and gas industry in the UK has more than halved, despite new fields being approved. In a declining basin, the way to create long-term secure jobs is to invest in a just transition and support workers to transition into clean energy industries that have a future.
We need to keep the pressure on to ensure that this victory leads to the lasting change we desperately need. The climate movement is coming together for a No New Oil & Gas MP & MSP Week of Action on 3 - 9 March. We need to make sure that every MP and MSP hears from their constituents that for a safe climate and affordable energy, we must stop new oil & gas now.
Never considered meeting your MP or MSP before? Even better! We’ll give you everything you need to make it easy and straightforward, including a step by step guide. You don’t need to be anywhere close to an expert to make an impact. Personal connection is far more impactful than numbers or statistics alone - and we’ll give you all you need to make a difference.
Today has been a massive step forward towards a sustainable fossil-free future for all. The next months will set the course for the UK’s energy future. Let’s make sure it’s a future we can be proud of.
