For the planet and our future, we need to #StopRosebank.
Oil giant Equinor, which is majority-owned by the Norwegian government, wants to open up the biggest undeveloped oil field in the UK - Rosebank. This one field alone would produce more CO2 emissions than the poorest 28 countries in the world do in a year.
The UK government has just approved the project and now it’s up to Equinor and the Norwegian government to decide if they want to go ahead with it. Rosebank would blow past UK climate targets and do nothing to improve energy security. Due to a purposeful loophole in the windfall tax, the UK government will hand Equinor a £3.75 billion tax break to develop the field. British taxpayers will be footing the bill while Equinor profits. Rosebank has to be stopped.
Rosebank is just the tip of the iceberg. Equinor is planning new fossil fuel projects around the world including in Canada, Argentina, Brazil and Tanzania. The Norwegian government must use its power as majority-owner to stop these climate-wrecking projects.
Norway presents itself as a ‘climate leader’ by announcing ambitious climate targets, but these are undermined by Equinor’s plans to burn more oil & gas than is compatible with a liveable future. In 2022, only a miniscule 0.13% of Equinor’s energy production was renewable and 86% of Equinor’s investments were in fossil fuels. Equinor spends millions on greenwashing, but the truth is that Equinor plans for its oil production in 2030 “to be on par with today,” according to CEO Anders Opedal. This is not a company committed to net zero.
By allowing its state-owned oil company Equinor to throw fuel on the climate crisis, Norway is ignoring warnings from the United Nations, the International Energy Agency and global scientists that we can have NO NEW fossil fuel projects if we want to limit global warming to 1.5℃ and avoid the worst consequences of the climate crisis.
This summer we have seen extreme weather events with catastrophic consequences across the world, from floods to heatwaves and wildfires. While the world suffers from record-breaking temperatures, Equinor celebrates record-breaking profits. As long as it allows Equinor to open new fossil fuel projects, Norway is on the wrong side of history.
Time is running out, but it’s not too late to act. We call on Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and the Government of Norway to:
Sign to add your voice to the call on Norwegian Government and Equinor to #StopRosebank and all new oil and gas now!
